China to eliminate 42 million tonnes backward coke capacity in 2011-2015

The State Council of China recently released the 12th Five-year Plan on energy saving and emission reduction and urged strict implementation by local governments.

According to the Plan, by 2015, the energy consumption per CNY 10, 000 of China gross domestic product (GDP) shall be reduced to 0.869 tonnes of standard coal down 16% from 1.034 tonnes of standard coal in 2010 and 32% from 1.276 tonnes of standard coal in 2005.

During the 12th Five-year Plan period, there will be 670 million tonnes of standard coal equivalent saved. The Plan also requires to eliminate backward production capacity, respectively 20 million kilowatts of small thermoelectricity generation, 48 million tonnes of iron production, 48 million tonnes of steel production, 370 million tonnes of cement production, 42 million tonnes of coke production and 15 million tonnes of paper making.

Furthermore, China plans to invest CNY 2.366 trillion in major energy-saving projects in the five years through 2015, saving 300 million tonnes of stand coal equivalent during the period
